A Conversation With Adventurer-Sailor Matt Rutherford (Underway) About His Latest Feat Chesapeake sailors know Matt Rutherford for his record-breaking solo sail around the Americas in 2011-12, his Ocean Research Project (ORP), and more exciting bluewater voyages to collect environmental data at sea. Now, the adventurer has embarked on a new journey around the Arctic, solo, aboard his Valiant 42 Chimera.

She dots the Norfolk, VA, waterfront like the perfect bowtie on a tux. She is fitting, formal, fascinating, and fun. She is the gorgeous American Rover, a 135-foot three-masted schooner, crowning the city view and offering seasonal sunset tours for locals and tourists. American Rover offers two-hour daytime and sunset cruises offered, as well as private catered events. Her green steel hull was built in Panama City, FL, in 1985.

A Cruiser Truly Living the Sailing Dream When I met solo sailor Julie Roberts in a boater’s lounge in 2022, little did I know I would soon join her on two epic sailing adventures aboard her catamaran. Across the years, I have watched Julie’s evolution as a singlehanded cruiser who generously invites family and friends to join her. Her guests run the gamut of sailing capabilities, and she has gained a lifetime of lessons.
