Vision care services in the Spokane area will be impacted in the new year, as three MultiCare Rockwood eye clinics will close in Spokane County effective Dec. 31. MultiCare Health System is scheduled to close: Rockwood Eye & Optical Center-Downtown, at 300 E. Fifth, in Spokane; Rockwood Eye Center-Valley, at 1414 N. Houk Road, in Spokane Valley; and Rockwood Eye Center-Northpointe, at 605 E.
EWU moves to next phase of Roos Field renovations
Eastern Washington University is moving forward with an $8 million renovation at Roos Field as part of the university's long-term plan to invest nearly $250 million in campus facilities over the next decade. The project represents the second phase of a planned $25 million renovation of Roos Field, with private donations leading funding efforts for each phase. Second-phase improvements include an elevated press box to be constructed above the eastern grandstands.
Rockwood Retirement proposes $275M Liberty Lake campus
Spokane-based Rockwood Retirement Communities is actively engaged in planning a new senior living campus within the River District development in Liberty Lake, according to a press release. About 200 independent living residences, 36 assisted living apartments, and 24 memory care residential units are proposed.

A view from 100
It seems everyone wants to ask a centenarian the exact same question: What's the secret of living to 100? Though it’s a fair question, I’m not sure the answer would tell us much. Longevity is a measure of time; it says little about the qualities of life lived between birthdays. The better question is what’s important after a person has had 100 years to sort through what matters and what doesn't. Recently, I had the pleasure of talking with Spokane’s Corky Houchin.
Former SRHD health officer starting endowment
Although he considers himself partially retired, Dr. Bob Lutz is finding ways to keep caring for the well-being of the public. The former Spokane Regional Health District health officer spends his free time caring for vulnerable people through the CHAS Health Street Medicine team, while he serves as the health officer for the Asotin County Health District in southeastern Washington, a position he has held since 2018.

Seniors face greater risks from wildfire smoke
Wildfire smoke has become an expected feature of Spokane summers, and research shows exposure to it can have short- and long-term health effects — especially for more sensitive groups, including seniors. “Breathing in smoke isn’t good for anyone, and everyone should take steps to reduce their exposure when we’re having unhealthy air quality,” says Lisa Woodard, communications and outreach manager for the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency.
Gonzaga's Pac-12 entrance brings opportunity
Gonzaga University has officially entered the Pac-12 Conference, and the move could prove to be one of the most consequential decisions in the history of its athletic program, especially concerning the school’s storied men’s basketball team, says Ryan Turcott, associate professor of kinesiology and sport management at the university. The move comes as the business of college athletics undergoes a historic transformation, Turcott explains.
