The Standard-Speaker publishes seven days a week, 365 days a year, serving Greater Hazleton and other communities in southern Luzerne, northern Schuylkill and northern and western Carbon counties of Pennsylvania.
The newspaper traces its roots to the first printing of the Hazleton Sentinel on Jan. 18, 1866. After various mergers and name changes, the Standard-Sentinel merged with The Plain Speaker in 1961 to become the Hazleton Standard-Speaker. The newspaper has been owned by Times-Shamrock Communications, a Scranton-based media company, since 2007. Source

Southbound to perform at Freeland Public Park Pavilion
Southbound will make their debut at the Freeland Public Park Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 24. Southbound is an electric/acoustic classic rock duo that brings years of experience to the stage. They do not play any backing tracks or use electronic drums. What the audience will hear is their own curated renditions of favorite classic rock tunes from the 1970s to today.
Hazleton Area Public Library receives Pizza Hut Foundation grant

The Pizza Hut Foundation, in partnership with the iconic Book It! reading program, has awarded an $8,000 Slice of Literacy Grant to Hazleton Area Public Library, recognizing the organization’s outstanding commitment to promoting literacy and empowering people of all ages in the local community. The grant supports the Pizza Hut Foundation’s goal to expand the Pizza Hut Book It! reading program through additional literacy-focused initiatives.

As he cruised through his hometown, he stared through windows in amazement as people he didn’t recognize waved at him from crowded sidewalks along State Street. Nico Bustos felt a little overwhelmed that Saturday afternoon in November. He and his teammates on the Abington Heights boys soccer team had won their first-ever PIAA Class 3A championship a few hours earlier. He scored a goal in the 2-0 victory on a header in the second half.

Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod Assembly Pastor Jennifer Dee, NEPA Synod Assembly (SUBMITTED) Pastor Jennifer Dee was elected to a six-year term as bishop at the 2026 synod, becoming the first woman elected bishop to the organization. Bishop-Elect Dee currently serves as lead pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Robesonia. She has served in that role since 2023, following more than a decade of ministry as associate pastor at Trinity.
