The National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) has received a state-of-the-art heater-cooler unit valued at €75,000 from Quantum LC and WBHO Ltd to support open-heart surgeries at the Centre. The latest-generation Liva-Nova 3T heater-cooler unit is intended to upgrade the Centre’s cardiopulmonary bypass system and enhance patient care during critical cardiovascular procedures.

Awudu Ishaq, PNC General Secretary, says Ghana’s persistent challenges with the senior high school placement system are largely self-inflicted and could have been addressed over the years. The country has long been aware that school placement is a structural problem, yet successive efforts have failed to completely address the weaknesses that continue to affect students and their families.

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Abas Apaak has hit back at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its criticism of the Mahama administration’s handling of Ghana’s education sector. In a Facebook post, Dr. Apaak said the Education Ministry would not only respond to what he described as lies and propaganda but would also highlight the record of the previous administration.

Government Communications Team Member and Director of the National Service Authority, Nat Tetteh, said the figures reflect a wider imbalance in the distribution of demand across the different categories of senior high schools. More than 313,000 students who selected Category A senior high schools (SHSs) as their first choice are competing for just 76,417 available places, highlighting the intense pressure on some of the country’s most sought-after schools.

Awudu Ishaq, PNC General Secretary, has raised concerns over what he describes as privileged access to Ghana’s school placement system, arguing that such access undermines fairness and creates room for the process to be influenced. Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mr Ishaq said the system remains vulnerable to manipulation when people in higher positions are able to intervene in the placement process. “Computerised means we are trying to remove the human element,” he said.
