Sacramento State bounced back to secure a series win over Montana, taking two of three games on the back of explosive innings and clutch hitting. After dropping the opener, the Hornets responded with back-to-back wins to improve to 5-4 in Big Sky play. April 10, 10 a.m.: Montana 9, Sac State 6 The series opened with Montana taking the first game behind a late offensive surge from the Grizzlies.

When Sacramento State softball head coach Lori Perez first saw her senior outfielder Lafulafu Malepeai in person, she didn’t need a stat sheet to recognize her talent. Opposing teams made the message loud and clear. “I got a chance to watch her play during her state championship tournament and they didn’t even want to throw to her,” Perez said.

Sacramento State baseball looked to continue their momentum off their first Western Athletic Conference series win of the season against Utah Valley University on Tuesday with their rematch at home against the University of San Francisco. Trouble mounted early when junior pitcher Konner Entz and junior catcher Ayden Hadley had an eventful first inning. Hadley is one of the two catchers that is filling in for the injured senior catcher Jacob Cortez.

A fire was reported in a vacant building on the corner of University Avenue and Campus Commons Road at 4:15 p.m., just over a mile away from Sacramento State’s campus across the river. The fire is currently contained as of 5 p.m., and it is unknown if anybody was inside the building at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but Sacramento Fire Department said they are investigating suspicious circumstances.

The first game of the Friday doubleheader was headlined by Sacramento State’s ace, senior pitcher Ethan Lay. The Hornets got off to a quick start in the series before clinching it by winning the rubber match. The final game of the series was a complete game for the Hornets, as every batter in their lineup recorded a hit on their way to their first Western Athletic Conference series win of the season.

Students at Sacramento State recognized the annual Day of Silence on Friday, April 10, a national student-led observance day meant to raise awareness about bullying and harassment faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. According to LGBTQ+ education and advocacy organization Glisten, the Day of Silence began in the 1990s as a student-led action. The movement began at the University of Virginia in 1996 and has been held annually on the second Friday of April.
