Donald Trump has long maintained that offshore wind turbines are ugly, expensive, and possibly responsible for whale strandings, bird deaths, and poor golf scores. So naturally, his administration has spent billions trying to kill an American energy industry while China and Europe race ahead building it. In Trump’s defense, if there’s one thing history teaches us, it’s that fighting windmills always works out great. I was never a huge Elvis fan, but I liked a lot of his music.

Elon Musk just notched another record-breaking SpaceX launch and is once again talking about putting a million people on Mars within ten years. It’s a classic Musk promise: equal parts breathtaking ambition and science-fiction fan fiction. Getting a handful of astronauts to Mars would be one of the greatest engineering feats in human history.

Trump has declared his new Iran deal a tremendous, historic, spectacular victory. There’s just one tiny problem: none of the goals he originally set out to achieve appear to have been achieved. But why let outcomes ruin a perfectly good victory lap? The arch is built. The trumpets are blaring. Trump keeps nodding off during cabinet meetings, and maybe it’s not such a mystery after all. There’s only so much time a person can spend listening to a room full of hand-picked loyalists baa-baa-baaing their agreement before the eyelids get heavy. When every idea is brilliant, every decision is historic, and every sentence ends with enthusiastic applause, the line between a cabinet meeting and counting sheep starts to disappear. The worst part about it is he always eventually wakes up.

Trump approaches foreign policy the way a reality-show promoter approaches a cage match: lots of hype, lots of bravado, and very little thought about what happens after the bell rings. Starting a conflict is easy.
