Mountains Music and Motorcycles has been shifted into September this year to avoid the worst of the summer heat. The family friendly festival is scheduled Sept. 18-20 in downtown Mountain View. Events include the longstanding shows and games that have been core attractions, along with newer activities such as arm wrestling, tattoo contest and mini-trike races. Registration for events opens Friday at 8 a.m., and vendors will be open by 9.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, in partnership with various state and local partners, will sponsor a free fishing derby for ages 4-12 at Mirror Lake in Blanchard Springs Recreation Area on Sept. 12. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with fishing allowed from 9 to 11 a.m. Participation awards and contest prizes will be presented at noon at the large pavilion in the day use area.

The Ouachita and Ozark–St. Francis National Forests are experiencing heightened wildfire activity due to a combination of persistent triple-digit heat and lack of recent precipitation. These factors have created ideal conditions for active fire behavior across both forests. Firefighter and public safety remains the highest priority.
