When it comes to medical technology advancements, women’s reproductive health can feel like the final frontier.

For much of my engineering career, imagination felt like the so-called “soft skill” — something to be indulged in before the “serious” work began. Once a project entered the room, we dealt in facts, risks, requirements, schedules, costs, and what could realistically be delivered. We were trained to solve the problem in front of us, often under considerable pressure and within constraints we had not chosen. I have come to learn that discipline matters.

The “Her Stories: Adventures in STEM” blog series is a collection of stories about 20 women in science and engineering fields, written by members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Pre-College Working Group. These inspiring women have experienced a variety of life experiences and career paths, and these stories and accompanying artwork help to capture the vast diversity of our featured scientists and engineers.

BD Innovating for the 51% Scholarship BD invites undergraduate SWE members to share innovative ideas for addressing women’s health disparities. Two winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship, complimentary registration to WE26, a cash award to help cover travel expenses, and an exclusive invitation to BD’s annual SWE networking dinner.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Europe Inspiration Sessions are one-hour virtual sessions that are free to join and open to all around the world. Each session is led by one or more engineering professionals who are based in Europe. Session topics include career insights, the importance of mentorship, cybersecurity, and much more. Individuals who missed the live sessions can watch them on demand on the SWE Inspiration Session playlist on SWE’s YouTube channel.

Alma Kuppinger Forman, P.E., F. SWE, founding member and Fellow living in Pennsylvania, celebrated her 100th birthday in April this year surrounded by family and friends. She also celebrates 76 years of SWE membership. Forman is a Philadelphia Section charter member and was named to the section’s hall of fame in 1990. She is the first woman to earn a degree in civil engineering at Drexel Institute of Technology. She worked with SWE to establish the Alma Kuppinger Forman, P.E. Scholarship in 2013.
