MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair’s Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) spent nearly three hours on August 20 reviewing an application by Nick and Mary Ann Zecchino — owners of the property at 6 and 12 Baldwin Street, where Nicolo’s Italian Bakery and a nearby wood-frame house stand — to demolish both structures and replace them with two new buildings. But in a striking twist, one of the most steadfast opponents of the plan was Nicolo’s Italian Bakery itself.

The Montclair Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) met for nearly three hours on August 20 to review an application by Nick and Mary Ann Zecchino, the owners of the property on which Nicolo’s Italian Bakery and a nearby wood frame house stand, to demolish both structures and replace them with two new buildings that would provide new housing and an enlarged number of units overall, as well as provide a new storefront for Nicolo’s Italian Bakery, the Zecchinos’ family business.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001 was beyond what any of us could fully grasp at the time, taking the lives of 2,977 people across three tragic attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Among the nearly 750 people New Jersey lost that day were nine Montclair residents: Michael L. Collins, Caleb Arron Dack, Emeric J. Harvey, Scott M. Johnson, Howard L. Kestenbaum, Robert M. Murach, David Lee Pruim, Ronald J. Ruben, and Michael Stewart.

Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001 was beyond what any of us could fully grasp at the time, taking the lives of 2977 people across three tragic attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C. and in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania where 40 passengers and crew downed a plane headed to a third target. New Jersey lost 700 people that day. Countless others, many of whom were first responders, suffered illnesses and death following the exposure to toxic smoke and other substances.
