Legacy of colonial biodiversity exploitation explains poverty in biodiversity-rich countries – new research
Posted on: 19 August 2026 Nature provides resources to society and the diversity of species, (think of pollinators, for example), is expected to underpin human economies. So why then are the poorest countries also those that are richest in wildlife, containing a high number of different species? The reason, according to new research, is that colonial exploitation of that biodiversity by now-rich countries created poverty legacies that persist today.

Writing about the latest round of tariffs imposed by US President Trump on the EU, for failing to enforce a ban on forced labour in supply chains that pass through Europe. In the piece Dr Eustace argues that despite not having a leg to stand on when it comes to workers’ rights, Trump is right that the EU is soft on slave labour.
Steroids reduce inflammation in chronic mycobacterial lung infections without limiting antimicrobial defence
Posted on: 11 August 2026 Researchers from Trinity and St. James’s Hospital have shown that dexamethasone, a commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory steroid, can reduce harmful inflammation triggered by Mycobacterium avium without weakening the ability of human immune cells to control the infection. The findings suggest dexamethasone may thus offer a new adjuvant approach for better managing nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease.
