WASHINGTON — The construction industry added 22,000 jobs on net in August, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a year-over-year basis, industry employment has expanded by 120,000 jobs, an increase of 1.5%. Nonresidential construction employment grew by 10,400 positions in August, with gains in 2 of the 3 subcategories.

On an annual basis, data center capital expenditure is forecast to rise from roughly US$800 billion per year in 2026 to $1.8 trillion per year in 2050. The U.S., which is central to the advanced-chip ecosystem, is expected to capture almost half (48%) of this investment, at $15.1 trillion.

Construction employment increased in fewer than half—173, or 48%, out of 360—of metro areas between July 2025 and July 2026, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of new government employment data. Association officials said that despite the widespread job losses, contractors that are building data centers and advanced manufacturing facilities are still struggling to find qualified workers to hire.
