A boiler explosion at the 1200 MW coal-fired power plant in Chhattisgarh, India operated by Vedanta has resulted in 19 fatalities and multiple injuries. The explosion occurred on 14 April 2026 during routine operations. Initial reports confirmed a number of fatalities and injuries, with the death toll currently standing at 19. Operations at the plant have been suspended following the incident.

The UK National Energy System Operator (NESO) has said it will update its Demand Flexibility Service in the coming months to introduce measures to encourage consumers to increase their energy consumption during periods of excess electricity supply.

Amogy , a supplier of ammonia-to-power solutions, and GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) from South Korea have signed a joint venture agreement to develop carbon-free electricity generation systems using ammonia. The agreement includes development of a 40 MW plant at the Yeongilman Industrial Complex, which will use green ammonia as a carbon-free fuel to supply regional industrial electricity demand.

Egypt and Russia plan to accelerate work on the El Dabaa nuclear plant as part of their efforts to increase energy cooperation between the two countries. More info Mahmoud Esmat, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said that the El Dabaa facility was a cornerstone of Egypt’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.

Javier Medina, Ecuador’s Vice Minister of Electricity, has announced that the country will transfer the O&M of its largest hydropower plant, the 1500 MW Coca Codo Sinclair plant to Power China as part of an arbitration settlement. More info Medina said that Ecuador will receive $400 million from Power China as part of the settlement while retaining ownership of the plant. The plant was built in 2016 by China’s Sinohydro Corporation , a hydropower contracting unit of Power China.

The UK Government has approved the 800 MW Springwell Solar Farm in Lincolnshire, which will become the UK’s largest such farm by capacity. The project will include battery storage and grid connection infrastructure in North Kesteven. Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has instructed Taipower to restart two coal-fired units at Mailiao Power Plant in Yunlin County in May, because of concerns over LNG supply disruptions resulting from the war in Iran. More info Units 1 and 3 of Mailiao Power Plant are expected to initially resume operations for a three-month period, with a possible extension depending on developments in the Middle East.

More info The contract was awarded by Energotechnika Južna Bačka and involves the modernisation of the Vlasinske hydropower plants, which have been operational since 1955. The modernisation initiative is financially supported by loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
