Contributors provider balanced content in areas like rescue dogs, search methods, equipment, mitigation, and accident reports, along with related general-interest and timely news facing the profession. CHECK YOUR MAILBOXES FOR THE THIRD ISSUE OF THIS WINTER’S AVALANCHE REVIEW! NOT RECEIVING THE AVALANCHE REVIEW (TAR) YET? SUBSCRIBE HERE. We’ve lost some incredible members of our community in the last several months. As we were rocked by a string of tragic news within our industry, a dismal start to winter for much of the West, and other challenges ranging from daily life to global events, more than one of my peers expressed feelings of overwhelm, doubt, and despair.
SAW Season Kicks Off This Weekend
As the temperatures drop and the first flakes begin to fly, avalanche professionals and snow enthusiasts alike know what that means — Snow and Avalanche Workshop (SAW) season is here! A3 is proud to support multiple regional Snow & Avalanche Workshops in 2025, along with a professional development seminar in 2026. These events are a cornerstone for continued education, avalanche research updates, and connecting with peers across the snow and avalanche community.
ISSW 2026: ONLY ONE YEAR AWAY
By Nicole Koshure, Jerome David, and Tim Haggerty – Chairs, ISSW Whistler 2026 Calling all avalanche aficionados! ISSW Whistler 2026—a gathering of mind, body and soul for practitioners, professionals and researchers from around the world—is fast approaching. The conference kicks off in less than a year from September 28 to October 2, 2026. This will be the first time ISSW has been to Canada since Banff 2014.

By Scott Havens Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be a weather station. I imagine myself on top of a mountain, sitting quietly, observing the weather and looking out at all the other snowy peaks. Being in a storm would be thrilling, snow blowing sideways as the wind tries to tip me over. Every hour, I’d let the outside world know I exist by sending my observations to the internet.
