The Baker Orange

With another athletic season now underway, the Baker Wildcats have had a great start to the year. The four primary sports this fall season are football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball. While it is only the third week of the school year, athletes have been practicing and competing since late August. Cecilia is on the wrestling team and also part of resident life, where she is a Resident Assistant. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her friends and listening to Taylor Swift.

Since June, there has been a search to hire someone for a new position at Baker, the Vice President of Athletics. Currently, the leadership in the athletics department consists of Head Football Coach Miguel Regalado as the interim Athletic Director, Lynsey Payne as the Deputy Director of Athletics for sports administration and student athlete wellbeing and Matt Hevel as the Deputy Director of Athletics for communications and game operations.

About the Contributor Liberty Farr is a Freshman mass media major from Osawatomie, Kan. This is her first year on staff. Liberty is the CEB rep of Alpha Chi Omega and is on the dance team. In her free time she likes to read and draw.

Baker University football traveled to Dubuque, Iowa for its season opener. The Wildcats scored 20 points in the first half and added seven in the second half to secure a commanding 27-0 victory. The Wildcats improved to 1-0 and will turn their attention to next week’s matchup. “I was really wanting to see the boys execute on both sides of the ball and take care of the football on offense and take the ball away on defense.

This is her second year on staff. Kaleigh is on the Sports broadcasting track and is on the women’s bowling team. In her free time, she loves to hang out with her friends while watching sports, or just talking.

Across the sidewalk, a long row of flowers stands on the edge of Baldwin City resident Todd Fender’s yard. Fender  has been a resident of Baldwin City for 23 years. Before moving here, he had a lawn and tree service in Kansas City, starting out as a tree climber and arborist.

On Aug. 29, 1979, Kappa Sigma’s three-story house caught on fire, and brothers Steve Hoge, Stuart McCoy, Theodore “Ted” Bailey, David Sloop and Mark Morris lost their lives. The fire was thought to be caused by a careless smoking incident that led to the first floor catching fire. Over the weekend of Aug. 21-23, Kansas City’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission held its 46th annual Enrichment Festival at Swope Park. The festival featured more than 50 national booths selling regional food, clothing and wares, bringing together communities from around the world. Jamaica, Turkey, Japan, Ireland, India, Switzerland, Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, to name a few, lined the campground from Friday to Sunday, sharing their cultures with Kansas City.

Women’s Equality Day is a landmark in history commemorating the certification of the 19th Amendment, which granted all women the constitutional right to vote. This year marks the 106th anniversary of its establishment. Women across the country are celebrating a profound triumph made possible by early suffragists (National Archives). August 26 encompasses an important history and change for women in the United States. Prior to 1920, men were the sole voice of our democracy.
