The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) is the representative body that exists to protect the freedoms and promote the interests of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers, including ski-mountaineers. The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions. Source

How to climb the Weissmies – the perfect first 4,000m peak
Unlike many famous Alpine giants, the Weissmies is not dominated by dramatic north faces or technical rock climbing. Instead, its beauty lies in its graceful ridges and panoramic position overlooking some of the highest mountains in the Alps. British Mountain Guide Tom Ripley talks us through the climb. The Weissmies is my favourite of the easier 4,000-metre peaks. The mountains above Saas-Fee and Saas-Grund offer a rewarding combination of accessibility, scenery and classic alpine mountaineering.
Get Stuck In! Moorland Conservation Volunteering Day (with National Trust) | 8th November 2026
Much work has been done in recent years to restore to health the peat bog covered moortops and the surrounding wooded cloughs that give our Dark Peak moorlands their essential character. Peatlands are the UK’s single biggest store of carbon, storing the equivalent of 20 years of all UK CO2 emissions, keeping it out of the atmosphere (and sequestering more when in good health) so are a vital to our attempts to fight climate change.

Have your say on the future of climbing and walking in the Mendips
Mendip Hills National Landscape has launched a public survey to better understand how people use and value the landscape. The results will inform a new Recreation Strategy and help build the evidence needed to secure future funding for improvements across the National Landscape, including better public transport and improved access infrastructure. While the survey is aimed at everyone who enjoys the Mendips, it's particularly important that climbers and hill walkers have their voices heard.
