The Clinton Yellowjackets scored first and last but in between it was all Lamar as the Jackets fell 42-14 in the home opener at Jim Tumlison Field. It was the first home opening loss for Clinton since 2020’s loss to Melbourne. Just like last week’s season opening loss at Forest City, injuries and turnovers played a part. Quarterback Brayden Venable and running back Ayden Hayes both left the game early with injuries. The Jackets turned the ball over five times on the night – all fumbles.

In 1863, the United States of America and the Confederate States of America were in the midst of what we now call the Civil War. On June 1, 1863, 19-year-old Willis Meadows of Lanott, Alabama, joined Company G of the 37th Alabama Regiment. Willis was a fierce hunter who realized early on that missing a shot at wild game meant that he and his family would not have any meat on the table. Within days of his enlistment, his superiors recognized his shooting skills and made him a sharpshooter.

Brad and Mary Robbins, Greenbrier landowners, have been selected as the 2026 Southern Regional Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year by The American Tree Farm System (ATFS) and are now in the running for a national award. The Robbins property began with 60 acres purchased in 1975 by Brad’s father, Lou Robbins. There was no power, potable water, or housing on the property.

Andrew Cleland was the guest speaker for the Fairfield Bay Rotary Club this week. A retired Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, Cleland enlisted in 2011 with plans to progress through the Air Force Graphic Design Program. His background in art and painting made him a natural fit. When the program ceased six months later, he found himself in Imagery Analysis in South Korea, deciphering images collected from U-2 spy planes flying over North Korea.

“Our Colorful World” is the theme of the newly-hung art exhibit by the North Central Arkansas Artist League (NCAAL) at Ozark Health Medical Center, 2500 Highway 65 S. in Clinton. The public is invited to view 66 pieces by art by 11 local area artists, which are all available to purchase, with a portion of each sale helping Hospital Auxiliary projects. One artist is donating all her sales money to the Auxiliary.

Arkansas expanded its maternal health services on September 1 when Medicaid began reimbursing doula and lactation consultant care under rules recently approved by the Arkansas Legislative Council. The move follows the council’s Administrative Rules Subcommittee endorsement and completes a process initiated by two laws passed in 2025: the Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies Act and Act 625.

The Van Buren County Livestock Show and Fair Inc. has been educating the youth on agriculture and providing family wholesome events for the better part of 90 years. The VBC Livestock Show and Fair Inc. was incorporated in 1937 by a local group of 22 citizens making it one of the oldest corporations still in effect in Van Buren County. Each member of the founding 22 members pledged $2 apiece to create their starting budget.

The Van Buren County Fair is now underway through Saturday. GW and Commercial buildings are open to 9 p.m. daily. On Friday the horse show halter class will be held at 10 a.m., Strut Your Mutt contest at 6 p.m. and pro wrestling at 7 p.m. On Saturday, livestock premium auction is at 10 a.m., herdsman presentation awards at 11:30 a.m., Best of Best livestock contest at 5 p.m. and live music at 6. The crescent moon pairs with bright Venus on Monday, after sunset, low in the west.
