The Coop Scoop by Marc Coope
Newsletter (Digital)
I offer a unique perspective that is rooted in historically progressive principles but spares absolutely no sacred cows. This is not one more hack newsletter blindly supporting this or that cause, party or sect. I call ‘em as I see ‘em. Nobody gets a pass.
I’ve been a journalist for 50 years having worked for everybody from The Nation to the Los Angeles Times and the Guardian, from The Progressive to Harper’s, and the New Yorker, to the L.A. Weekly and Village Voice among many other outlets. I have produced and reported radio and TV documentaries for Pacifica, the CBC, BBC, Christian Science Monitor Television, PBS Frontline and CBS News.
I have published three non-fiction books including “Pinochet and Me” that was translated into several foreign editions and was a Los Angeles Times Best-Seller.
For 15 years I taught Journalism at the USC Annenberg School spending the last 7 years there as a full time Associate Professor and Founding Director of Annenberg Digital News retiring in 2015.
As a younger man, I worked as translator to Chilean President Salvador Allende and escaped Chile 8 days after the 1973 coup under UN protection. Source

July 6, 2026 By Marc Cooper Day 4 of the Great American State Fair Thank Jesus that the Trump-backed takeover of America’s 250th anniversary week is finally coming to an end. It might be safe to turn on the news again. It was a catastrophe from start to finish with its DC-based Freedom 250 State Fair flop alongside the fetid Reflecting Pool. It was about as exciting as a 5th grade science fair, but with less to see and do.
Mixed Salad: Iran, Bibi, Trump, Pelley and Platner With a Dash of Toxic Humor
Monday June 8, 2026 By Marc Cooper (This is being written Sunday night so the war situation may change by the time you get this). As Donald Trump was trying to decide which Neanderthal to support in next week’s grotesque UFC cage fight on the White House lawn to celebrate his 80th birthday, Iran decided to celebrate the 100th day of Trump and Netanyahu’s war against them on Sunday by firing multiple missiles and rockets into Israel.

The Depraved Spectacle of the WHCA Dinner
CELEBRATING THE FIRST AMENDMENT April 27 2026 By Marc Cooper I’m a day late writing about the stomach-turning buffoon show that took place Saturday night at the Hinkley Hilton in D.C. It’s taken some time to overcome my fit of nausea and disgust. Since when did American journalists decide they needed the public approbation reserved for movie stars? I guess ever since they came up with the idea of a sparkling annual gala where you had to be seen to be seen.
"Like You Have Never Seen Before..."
April 6, 2026 By Marc Cooper Klamath Falls, Oregon I’m going to keep this short and easy as I am on the road to Reno to meet up with my sister for a few days and have been doing a lot of very tiring driving. It might seem like three months ago, but Donald Trump’s prime time speech on the war for which he asked for network air time, was actually only just a few days ago.
What is There Possibly to Write About This Week?
April 22-23 By Marc Cooper It’s not easy doing a regular newsletter and trying to stay current with the chaotic political state of play, let alone trying to get ahead of it. This week is particularly trying and challenging and leaves me wondering today what should I write about. I suppose I could write about what CNN calls “the bottom falling out of Trump’s polls.” He’s down to 33 percent overall approval. On the economy he’s now at 30-70. Forty-nine percent of Republicans are unhappy with him.
The Coop Scoop by Marc Cooper
May 26,2026 Bt Marc Cooper Donald J. Trump has been a disaster so often with such regularity that it has become difficult to distinguish between bad weeks and very bad weeks. This last week has been downright catastrophic for The Boss, his enablers and acolytes and possibly for the immediate future of the republic. Bad for Trump. Bad for MAGA. Bad for whatever normie Republicans are still out there and threatening to our democracy not to speak of the rest of the world.
What No Kings Did and Did Not Accomplish
March 30, 2026 By Marc Cooper The nearly 10 million people who came out across the weekend to protest every aspect of Donald Trump and his malevolent regime must be an inspiration to us all. In as many as 3000 different venues ranging from major metropolitan centers to backwater outposts, the message rang out loud and clear. We have had enough of Donald Trump. Enough of his stupidity and incompetence. Enough of his gallery of trolls in his cabinet. Enough of his economic bumbling.

Trump Is Slowly Crumbling -- Corrected Version!
May 27, 2026 By Marc Cooper I’ve never been hesitant to admit to mistakes, errors and jumbles. But something way beyond my control damaged the newsletter I sent out yesterday with many readers complaining it was so garbled it was hard to read. Yikes. I have no explanations as the draft was run twice through Chatgpt checking for typos and errors and the final output I saw and sent looked clean. So I wasn’t drunk or THAT careless.
