CELINA, Ohio -- Caleb Garringer hacked a chunk of time from his 2025 performance to lead the way. Three of the four Patriots behind him continued the pattern. While there is still work to do to climb in the team standings, four Jay County High School boys cut at least 30 seconds off of their time from the previous year -- and some much more -- for a sixth-place finish Saturday in the Green Division at the Celina Rotary Invitational at Wright State University - Lake Campus.

A Redkey Town Council member has filed complaints alleging she has been denied access to public records and that inappropriate actions were taken during an executive session. Brenda Beaty submitted a formal complaint June 6 with the Indiana Office of the Public Access Counselor. The office shared a notice of the complaint Aug. 6 with the Town of Redkey and gave the town until Sept. 3 to respond. Beaty emailed The Commercial Review details of the complaint this week.

ARCANUM, Ohio — The Indians finally dropped a set, but they still took the match. Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team slipped up in the first set but bounced back for a 19-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-10 victory over the Arcanum Trojans on Thursday. Brynn Willmann had a big day out of the middle to lead Fort Recovery (3-0) with 10 kills and seven blocks. She also had three aces. Alexis Grisez followed Willmann by putting down eight kills on the Trojans (0-1) and blocking two attacks.

The Patriots hadn’t scored on the Trojans since picking up the contract in 2024. This year, they found the end zone three times, but a lack of experience at the cornerback position and some missed point-after-touchdown attempts left them just shy of a win. The Jay County High School football team suffered a 21-19 loss to the New Castle Trojans on Friday, but showed some improvement on the offensive side of the ball.

The Patriots were shorthanded as two of their top three scorers were out against the Eagles with injuries. Raif Beiswanger and Jaxson DeHoff connected to get the Patriots on the board despite what they were missing. While the offense couldn’t provide any extra protection, Zavier Hudson and the defense took care of business. For nearly 30 years, a 1975 International Harvester 666 owned by late Portland resident Merle Shawver sat unused in a barn. Grandson Caleb Shawver recently restored the tractor to its former glory. The bright red piece of farm machinery has been on display this week at the Tri-State Antique Engine and Tractor Show, which concludes today.

FORT RECOVERY — Both teams delivered long scoring plays. Both were called for costly penalties. And while the Indians had a chance to tie the game late in each half, their early struggles proved a bit too much to overcome. Fort Recovery fell behind by two touchdowns early Friday and spent the rest of the night fighting to pull even against the Allen East Mustangs, coming up short in a 28-21 loss in their home opener. “Not the most crisp game,” said FRHS second-year coach Wes Wenning.
