On Thursday, August 27th we published a special second section of The Equity devoted to the 170th anniversary of The Shawville Fair. Here are the stories we featured.

Both local authorities and provincial forest fire fighting service SOPFEU have issued a total fire ban for the entirety of the region, as recent weather has made for dangerous conditions. MRC Pontiac issued a total fire ban on the extent of its territory at 9 a.m. this morning (July 16). No open fires are permitted, though they do allow for propane fire pits.

Shawville Mayor Bill McCleary is resigning his post, effective July 15, less than a year into his second term in the position. McCleary announced the decision at the end of Shawville’s regular council meeting Tuesday night and gave his official notice to the town office the following day. He told THE EQUITY he had been considering the move for about three months. “It just seems that my vision and council’s vision aren’t the same. I’m finding that simple things take too long,” he said.

As a young girl, my dad sometimes took me fishing. I so wanted him to be pleased with me, that I even put my own worm on the hook just like my brothers. He showed me how to cast my line out. I don’t remember catching any fish though. My joy came from spending time with my dad. Recently, I listened to a talk about casting my cares and unwanted thoughts away. It’s a different type of casting and it is very good advice.

Waltham residents were saddened to hear of the passing of long time resident Lorna Perry-Turner. She was the beloved wife of Francis Frankie Turner. Lorna was an angel that walked among us. Lorna was the epitome of what it meant to be an amazing person. She was kind, generous and loving to everyone she met. She fiercely loved her family, friends and community. This reflected in her actions always reaching out silently to those in need.

Deepest condolences are going out to the family of Gerard “Giggy” Trudeau, as he passed away on July 5 at the age of 87. Giggy was a pillar of our community, a local businessman for many years, and he was well known and loved by many. Our thoughts are with his son Mark and all of Giggy’s family at this sad time. Birthday wishes are extended to Mack Baker, celebrating on July 15, and to Cowan Ramsay on the 16th.

Our sympathies to the Linttell family on the loss of William on July 6, at the age of 89. Our deepest condolences to the Bulmer family on the loss of Margaret on July 7, at the age of 97. Happy birthday to the following people celebrating their special day this upcoming week: Susan Foster, Heidi Hall, Daniel Fish, Sharon Gravelle, Géraldine Longpré, Arlene Saunders, Darleen Murray, Marilyn Hobbs McNally, Lee Rawlins, Pierrette Meilleur and Lorne Pirie.

Dear Editor, I was surprised how visceral of a response I had today after reading some posts online penned by Anonymous. I know that there are many reasons that have been used over the last few hundred years for people to use Anonymous as a pen name. To try and understand why this bothered me so much I did some internet work on how it has been used. I knew some quite well-known literature has been published with Anonymous as the pen name.

This week we are continuing our dive into the Wyman Women’s Institute Cook Book, published on the occasion of the group’s 60th anniversary in 1973. This week’s recipe is “Pork chop casserole”, a nice and easy recipe to get your loved ones fed in a jiffy. Plenty of options to sub things out if you’re feeling adventurous, a tangy sauce could replace the ketchup and any kind citrus would probably do if you don’t have lemons lying around.
