As promised, here’s a list of my favorite books of 2023 in no particular order. Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward Annis, a young adult slave, is sold south by her sire, a rice plantation owner in the Carolinas, which sets in motion a journey of grief, rebirth, and ultimately, ascendance.

I’m not making any promises about consistency moving forward, but I confess I’ve been itching to write as of late and I hope to make a healthier rhythm of it in the new year.

This month’s newsletter will be a little bit different. Let me start with an update. Many of you stumbled onto this newsletter via Twitter, which has historically been the platform I’m most active on. But recently, Substack announced a new feature called “Notes” that will allow creators to share updates and resources with their readers in a timeline on the platform. I’m excited about the update, but the CEO of Free Speech is not.

I’m terrible at staying current on TV or movies. Unless it’s Tolkien or Marvel related, there’s a good chance it will take me a year or more to sit down and actually watch it—even when that it is an adaptation of a novel I adore, like Station Eleven. If you’re unaware, Station Eleven takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where 99% of the human population has been killed by a virulent flu pandemic.
