The horse had recently been purchased in Texas and transported to Washington. It’s currently recovering under veterinary care, and two exposed horses on the private farm are under quarantine.

On Sept. 9, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness confirmed an unvaccinated horse in the Regional Municipality of Durham positive for West Nile virus. The 19-year-old Draft gelding began showing acute neurologic signs on Aug. 25 and was euthanized. An IgM serum test came back positive for WNV. This is Ontario’s third confirmed case of equine WNV in 2026.
