A man has been charged with murdering Ann Widdecombe, according to the Crown Prosecution Service. The 78-year-old former Conservative minister, who later served as a Reform UK spokeswoman, was discovered dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor shortly before noon on Thursday 9 July. She had suffered severe injuries. Joshua Kerry, a 28-year-old from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, faces the murder charge. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

A new outpatient addiction service has been launched in Athlone, Co Westmeath in response to increased demand for treatment from the west of the country, particularly among those affected by gambling. The Rutland Centre, which runs a specialist addiction treatment service in Knocklyon in Dublin, is introducing a second outpatient service to the midlands, reports RTE. The new service responds to growing demand from people who previously faced lengthy journeys to Dublin to access treatment.

The Irish Government has approved plans to ban e-scooter use for anyone under the age of 18. All riders will also be required to wear high-visibility jackets and helmets. These rules are set to come into force in August. Further legislation planned for later this year will classify e-scooters as mechanically propelled vehicles. This will introduce mandatory licensing and registration requirements.

A 29-yr-old man from Drogheda has been charged with dangerous driving after a car was driven into a group of people in Skerries over the weekend. Sean McGlone  appeared in Balbriggan District Court this morning. Garda Ultan McElroy told the court that he arrested McGlone at his home in Drogheda around 6pm on Sunday on suspicion of endangering the public by driving. He was then brought to Balbriggan Garda Station and formally charged with dangerous driving at 10:20pm.

A man who carried out a “savage” and unprovoked one-punch assault on a homeless man in Dublin city centre almost three years ago has been jailed for six years. Shane Murray, who was then aged 19, assaulted Damien Merrigan, then aged 49, at Aston Quay on 7 September 2023, with Merrigan sustaining serious injuries including head and facial fractures, reports Breaking News. Merrigan fell to the ground unconscious following the assault and spent seven days in Beaumont Hospital for treatment.
