Patients own immune cells genetically modified in the laboratory, track down the disease driving B cells, even deep within tissues. Inflammatory foci such as those seen here around the knee joints of a study participant (magenta) are no longer detectable even several months after CD19-CAR T-cell therapy (right in the PET-MRI image). Swelling and pain have subsided, with improved mobility.

Personalized cancer vaccines (PCVs) have changed the way we think about treating cancer. Instead of developing therapies for broad patient populations, these approaches are designed around the unique molecular profile of an individual patient's tumor. It’s one of the clearest examples that medicine is heading away from standardized treatment models and toward personalized therapies.
CAR T Before Surgery Improves Glioblastoma Control in Mice
Administering CAR T cells before glioblastoma surgery improved tumor control and survival compared with treatment after surgery in two mouse models. The study, led by researchers at the University of Geneva and Geneva University Hospitals, also identified surgery-induced changes in the tumor microenvironment that may restrict the effectiveness of postoperative immunotherapy. Surgical resection remains the first-line treatment for glioblastoma, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
