TEMPE, Ariz. — Hunched over a chair, staring down at his hat in hand, Morgan State coach Damon Wilson simply laughed and shook his head before trying to explain the 60-minute battering his team endured. He and his MSU squad knew it faced an uphill climb, but it didn’t take long for any dreams of an upset against Football Bowl Subdivision opponent Arizona State to quickly fade away.

This Saturday, the Morgan State football team enters a match up against Arizona as a huge underdog. The Bears are traveling across the country to face a Big 12 opponent at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. Analytical models and sports books project a 99% chance of the Sun Devils winning, forecasting a 50-6 Arizona State victory and leaving Morgan State with just a 1% chance.

Former Morgan State linebacker Erick Hunter made the Detroit Lions’ 53-man roster Sunday evening, officially earning a spot in the NFL ahead of the 2026 season. Hunter, a Waldorf native and Westlake High School alum, graduated from Morgan State in spring 2026 with a degree in business administration. His latest accomplishment comes after the MEAC named him its Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2025-26 academic year.

While students were away for summer break, Morgan State University continued to make headlines. The university prepared to welcome another record-breaking class, approved future increases to tuition and adjusted housing plans after construction delays. Outside of campus, the legal case surrounding the 2023 Homecoming shooting also saw a major development. As Bears return to campus for the 2026-27 academic year, here’s what you may have missed this summer.

Both Morgan State and North Carolina A&T were hoping to make amends for last season’s respective disappointments in Saturday’s season opener. Coming off a 4-8 season, the Bears scored an early fourth-quarter touchdown after blocking a field goal attempt and tacked on another score to take a 17-7 victory on Saturday night in Greensboro, North Carolina. Morgan State coach Damon Wilson said the Bears didn’t necessarily make it easy on themselves, but at least they were prepared.

For Cameron Edge, the road to the role as starting quarterback for the Morgan football team has been a long one, winding from his Delaware high school to College Park to Ypsilanti, Michigan. Edge, who will lead the Bears in Saturday’s season opener against North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, said the path he took to get there was based on reliability and a commitment to putting his teammates first.

Morgan’s Communications Center was reopened Tuesday after it was closed Monday and for a portion of last week following reports of mold in the building. Jacqueline Jones, dean of the School of Global Journalism and Communication, declared classes would take place Wednesday after she received a positive response from the university’s Physical Plant department and the Office of Safety Health and Environment that there were no detectable traces of mold within the building.

Former Morgan State linebacker Erick Hunter was named MEAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2025-26 academic year, the conference announced Wednesday. Hunter, a 6-foot-4 inch linebacker from Capitol Heights, was a first-team all-MEAC selection last season, leading the Bears in tackles and forced fumbles, while also being recognized for his off-the-field contributions. Hunter is currently fighting for a spot on the Detroit Lions’ roster as an undrafted free agent.
