The Current, as it was known, was founded in 2006 by Niger Asije whilst at university in Newcastle. The aim of The Current was to counter the gap Niger saw in how student media groups reported news in their cities as well as featured arts and culture events.
At the time it was clear that there was a growing shift away from printed newspapers and FM radio broadcasts with the internet becoming the essential platform to utilize, so in 2006 The Current was started. The aim of the site was to not only celebrate the vast opportunities that Newcastle had as a city but to look further afield making great use of growing social media and at the time the dominate player was MySpace.
