On the second day of January 1985, the spirit took hold of Alice. She went out to heal the sick, and heal the sick she did. But sickness multiplied faster still, for Uganda was wracked with civil war. Within the year, the government would fall. Acholi soldiers who had killed for the ousted regime fled back north only to become strangers in their homes.
The Life Changing Magic of Hoarding
True American exceptionalism doesn’t spring from the nation’s statehouses but from its garbage cans. The contemporary US is objectively extraordinary in that virtually anyone, including the extremely poor, can acquire collections of material goods of a volume unprecedented in human history.
Nessuna Torno Indietro - 1938, 2025
Ann Goldstein’s new English translation of Italian-Cuban author Alba De Céspedes' debut novel, There’s No Turning Back (Nessuna Torno Indietro, 1938), is the first since the novel – and contracts for further translations of its text – was banned by the Mussolini regime in 1941. Despite its initial critical and commercial success, the novel’s portrayal of eight young women living in a convent-run boarding house in Rome in the 1930s was judged ‘immoral’ by Fascist censors.
Housing Crisis in the “Garden City of the East”
While people in cities across the Global North are unable to access affordable housing, their comrades in the Global South are dispossessed of houses that they and their families have lived in for generations. In South Asia, under the banner of development, people have been evicted from their houses to make space for exhibitions centers, transport projects (such as roads) or infrastructure.
New Neighbor, Who’s This?
On Friday nights in the 1990s, the American family came under attack. Intruders penetrated the home: they stole food, lured children into moral decay, and made a mess of the place. But they weren’t the phantasms imagined by the contemporaneous or current-day right, “superpredators” or “critical race theory” or “groomers.” No, these intruders had names—names like Kimmy Gibbler.
Korea Under Ceasefire
On February 6, 2025 the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) Lee Jae-myung spoke to the Economist and confirmed South Korea’s geopolitical dilemma. Lee had been cozying up to the US since ex-President Yoon Suk-yeol was indicted and removed from office in January. Uncharacteristic of his party, Lee had expressed a willingness to work with Korea’s former colonizer Japan and continue Yoon’s Sinophobic policies.
Instructions for Young Manhood
It will take generations to breed a perfect human. Start now. Take your clothes off in the locker room of your gym. Most people are naked in three places in the city: their apartment, their lovers' apartments, and here. It takes generations, and you are imperfect because your parents were. You will have to be the first of a line. * "No matter how much strength may be possessed," wrote Bernarr MacFadden, the Physical Culturist, "one always desires more. It is like money.
A Thorn in the Occupier’s Eye
South Lebanon is a lesson in steadfastness — an obstinate and determined testament to the willingness of an indigenous people to confront their occupier and achieve absolute victory. Israel's war of attrition, which was meant to grind down the Lebanese Resistance and its supporters, is brutally evident across both the south of Lebanon, as well as the southern suburbs of Beirut, or Dahye.

How the weight-loss industry Uses Black celebrity in the Ozempic era "The Nisha Chicken Salad " on Weight Watchers's website bears little resemblance to the salad Nisha Godfrey went viral for in 2022. It is two cups of spinach leaves with three ounces of grilled skinless, boneless chicken breast and an assortment of raw toppings in fractioned quantities coated with a single tablespoon of vinaigrette and a dusting of parmigiano reggiano. But it was never really about the salad.
AMLO All Along
Victor Sebastyen, Lenin, Pantheon 2017, 363. In 1917, in the wake of the Russian Revolution, Lenin was preoccupied with appointing the people that would run the government. The problem was that Lenin did not know much about what running the government meant. In a letter to Trotsky, Adolph Joffe, the Ambassador to Germany at the time, wrote, “The day after Leonid Krasin was named Transport Commissar…I was leaving Petrograd. I went to see Vladimir Ilych before I went.
