The News Observer's roots wind their way back through the many newspapers that have served Fannin County, Georgia over the years. Community Newspapers, Inc., parent company of The News Observer, entered the newspaper market in Blue Ridge, Georgia by purchasing The Blue Ridge Summit-Post in the early 1970s. Soon afterward, a free-circulation paper, The News Herald, went into competition against The Summit-Post. About 1981, The Observer, a free circulation, sister publication of the Summit Post began publishing. In 1989, the current owners of Community Newspapers, Inc., purchased the company. Then, in 1990, The News Herald was purchased by Community Newspapers, Inc., and was merged with The Observer to form The News Observer. Source

Ruth Hawkins, age 80, of Murphy, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2022, at Sonshine Manor in Blairsville, Georgia. Ruth was born August 31, 1941, in Dial, to the late Robert Cole Long and Sienna Farmer Long. She was of Baptist faith, and Ruth loved going to church and spending time with her church family. She loved shopping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She attended New Liberty Baptist Church for several years.
City of Copperhill will see new traffic signals from grant
The City of Copperhill has been awarded a 2026 Traffic Signal Modernization Program (TSMP) Grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), securing funding to modernize the traffic signals in the city.
Flooring approved for Fannin Animal Control building
Fannin County Board of Commissioners approved the use of $21,779 for Animal Control to receive new flooring Tuesday, October 26. The funds will come from the 2021 Animal Control budget. “We did have some savings over the year, and I believe we could use that, and we would still be in good shape moving forward towards the end of the year,” board Chairman Jamie Hensley said. The new floors would be installed in the kennels and back facility, but would not include the office space.
TVA, EMA give out weather radios
Dam safety was the focus of the July 18 event with Fannin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) at the EMA headquarters in Blue Ridge. Officials from both were on hand to answer questions, give out weather radios and enter residents into giveaways before TVA performed their annual siren warning system test. That system works with EMA's emergency notification system.
Fannin athletes use new performance center weight room
Members of the Fannin County Middle School football team spend time in the new weight room of the Fannin County School System's Athletic Performance Center. The busy facility is part of the new Athletic Complex at Fannin County High School.
McCaysville baulks at adding full-time night shift officer
Tempers flared and at one point a citizen was told he could not comment during a public hearing last Wednesday, September 2, to discuss McCaysville’s 2020-’21 budget. Rodney Patterson was told by Councilman Jason Woody to “sit there and don’t mention anything,” after Patterson had suggested selling the city’s house at the Toccoa River Park and using the money to pay for police officers.
TVA and county testing sirens, giving out weather radios
The Tennessee Valley Authority and Fannin County Emergency Management will test the Blue Ridge Dam emergency warning siren system Saturday, July 18, and will host a public event to hand out weather radios to residents downstream of the dam and to members of the general public. The sirens are strategically located and would be activated in the very unlikely event of a failure at the Blue Ridge Dam.

Mr. Thornton Warren Burk (Bunt) (TW), age 78, of Lickskillet Road, Blue Ridge, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, March 27, 2022, following an extended illness. Mr. Burk was born July 12, 1943, in Copperhill, the son of the late Doyle Burk and the late Reba Joyce Burk. Thornton loved camping, fishing, riding horses and wagons. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. His favorite thing was spending time with his family and friends.
Planning Commission to hear plans for another hotel
Heron Hotels hosted a public open house of sorts in April to share plans for a boutique hotel in downtown Blue Ridge. Those plans will go before the Blue Ridge Planning Commission Tuesday, August 4 at 6 p.m. as they attempt to rezone the proposed location from M-1 (Manufacturing District) to CBD (Central Business District). The property in questions lies at 260 East Main St., which Heron Hotels had under contract at the time of the open house.
Walk the Line 5K returns with Christmas in July Celebration
The Riverwalk Run Series invites runners, walkers, families, and visitors to celebrate summer in a uniquely festive way during the WPPL FM 103.9 Walk the Line 5K Saturday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. Part of America's only two-state 5K series, the event features a scenic riverside course that crosses between McCaysville, GAand Copperhill, TN, giving participants the opportunity to run in two states during a single race.
