The Open Data Institute (ODI) recently travelled to the Tec de Monterrey, Mexico City campus, to sponsor a hackathon and champion the adoption of Solid among a new community of developers focused on creating applications for social good in Mexico City. The hackathon was hosted by the DOT network, and the Young AI Leaders Community, Mexico City chapter.

During this interactive session, Rowenna will present her new framework designed to assist in identifying, articulating, and mitigating data-related harms. Unlike current approaches that attempt to quantify data harms as identifiable risks, Rowenna proposes treating them as hazards, which are often non-linear and chaotic.

This hackathon resulted in the creation of three applications, with the winning team taking home a prize of £1,000 and having the opportunity to present their creation at Solid Symposium. It served to demonstrate the potential that exists for relative newcomers to become quickly familiarised with Solid to the extent that they can develop proofs of concept in a matter of days, and will serve as a template for further Solid hackathons in future.

A well-designed digital ID can improve people's lives in concrete, measurable ways and several countries have built systems that work like this. However, to work this way, schemes must be built with this intention from the outset.
