By BROOKLYN BROWN BIGMEAT One Feather Reporter CHEROKEE, N.C.—The Cherokee Police Commission monthly meeting was held on the afternoon of Taline Iga (Tuesday), Duliisdi (Sept.) 8 in the Ginger Lynn Welch Poke Salad Room. Gahvsgi (Chairperson) Anita Lossiah called the meeting to order at 12 p.m. Secretary Israel Rodriguez led roll call.

The following ordinance was deemed read and tabled during the regular session of Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) on Tsoine Iga (Wednesday), Duliisdi (Sept.) 2:

Dwaine “Flea” George, 46, of the Birdtown Community, passed away peacefully with family by his side Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026. A native of Cherokee he was the son of Patty Buchanan of Cherokee. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Missy Miller.

Mary Louise Martin (Locust), age 91, of Cherokee, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Mountain View of Bryson City after a period of declining health. Mary was born June 22, 1935, to the late McKinley Locust and the late Mabel Buff Locust. She is survived by her children, Ellen Herron; granddaughter, Vivian Simpson (David); and grandson, R. J.

It should be noted that the following defendants have only been charged with the crimes listed and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Editor CHEROKEE, N.C. – The Tsalagi Anitsvyasdi (Cherokee Braves), representing the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, defeated the Choctaw Central Warriors, representing the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, in overtime 28-27 to win the Annual Battle of the Nations trophy.

Submitted by Sequoyah Birthplace Museum VONORE, Tenn. – The annual Remember the Removal bike ride is one the most significant journeys young Cherokees can take as they retrace the Trail of Tears through seven states and learn the history of how Cherokees were removed to Indian Territory in 1838. That story is in the new book “Riding the Trail: Cherokees Remember the Removal” by Cherokee author Traci Sorell and Cherokee journalist Will Chavez.

Phillip Charles Pheasant, 58, unexpectedly joined the love of his life, Valencia, in Heaven on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. A resident of Snowbird and Big Cove Communities in his younger days, and a current resident of the Birdtown Community in Cherokee, he was the son of the late Charles and Allene Ledford Pheasant. Phillip has had a lifetime career as a mechanic which began at 5 or 6 years old when he would squeeze between his dad and uncle Calloway when they would be under the hood of a car working.
