The Montgomery Biscuits (66-63, 31-29) broke open a one-run game with four runs in the ninth inning, handing the Rocket City Trash Pandas (66-62, 31-29) their second consecutive loss, 6-2, on Thursday night at Toyota Field in Madison. Despite the loss, Rocket City maintained its half-game lead over Knoxville in the Southern League North Division after the Smokies also lost Thursday night.

Disabled veterans will converge for bass fishing Sept. 18-20 when the inaugural Bama Brawl comes to Lake Guntersville. Tournament organizers Eric Newby and Ron Hines invite volunteer boat owners who are willing to partner with disabled veteran anglers for this first stop of the 2026 Paralyzed Veterans of America Bass Tournament Series. Hosted by Paralyzed Veterans of America and sanctioned by B.A.S.S., the Bama Brawl is open to all disabled veterans, regardless of paralysis status.

Retired Lt. Col. Paul Reeves died July 16. He was 96. The Korean War veteran served in Korea 1952-53. He was a longtime member of the Legacy 4 Korean War Veterans Foundation and regularly attended the monthly breakfast club social and the annual luncheon, along with many special evening outings to attend the Army Birthday celebration, concerts and more. Reeves enlisted in the Army in Detroit on May 1, 1947, at age 17.

This fall Redstone will have two opportunities to lace up their running shoes, support important causes and strengthen the sense of community across the Arsenal. The installation will hold its fifth annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Month 5K Fun Run and 1-Mile Walk on Sept. 16, followed by the inaugural Pretty in Pink 5K Run and Walk on Oct. 7. Both free events will begin at 7 a.m. at 3467 Vincent Drive, near the ChildWise building.

I was covering a high school football game on a Thursday night under the lights when something happened that brought together fans on both sides of the stadium. During a break in the action, the public address system played “9 to 5” by the great Dolly Parton. Many people started cheering and singing along. It was a touching tribute to an icon who died Aug. 25. She didn’t just leave us with memorable songs. She also left a legacy of helping others.

The sound of cheering spectators and dozens of languages could be heard on some roads of Huntsville and Madison this weekend. Fans and families from around the world gathered along a designated cycling course to watch athletes compete in the 2026 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, turning the international sporting event into a showcase for the Tennessee Valley as much as a competition.

The National Weather Service of Huntsville is teaming up with the Aviation and Missile Command and the National Center for Explosives Training and Research on Sept. 15 for a storm spotter training session. The annual class is held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the National Center for Explosives Training and Research building, 3750 Corporal Drive on Redstone Arsenal.
