The cause, unsurprisingly, is Donald Trump.

Donald Trump’s jowly countenance, greased in tawdry orange makeup and shining with the light of a thousand McDonald’s deep fryers, has in his declining years taken on a squinty, grainy aspect, a man who exists somehow in our plane of reality and in some cartoon dimension simultaneously. As he’s grown older, meaner, and fatter, his cruelty has expanded to meet the decline.

There’s a moment in every Trump story when the camera pulls back and you realize the person standing by his side, all rictus grins and extended thumbs, knew better. They weren’t some Twitter troll or Adderall-fried Telegram anon or a Facebook uncle who thinks JFK Jr. is alive and well thanks to secret MedBed technology. They were a pro. They had a résumé. They understood the game, the stakes, and the damage. And they did it anyway.

We live in an age of miracles and wonders, and some of those miracles and wonders are guaranteed to slam you deep, deep into the uncanny valley. In the last few days, your YouTube feed might have mentioned a channel called “Liberal America,” which has been slamming out videos of…well, me. Every few hours, another video pops up of me taking on the current issues of the day, very much using my voice, my image, although with smoother skin and perfect teeth.
