Chancellor Bloomberg announces he’s leaving KCCD May 20, 2026 Bakersfield College has officially appointed Dr. Stacy Pfluger as its permanent president after serving as interim president for the past year, Kern Community College District Chancellor Dr. Steven Bloomberg announced Monday, May 19. Later Monday evening, Bloomberg sent the campus community an email stating that he will leave KCCD to become the chancellor of the Maricopa Community College District in Arizona.

May 13, 2026 On Wednesday May 6 at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. an Miracle Mutts brought in therapy dogs to Peace Garden near the library where BC students were welcomed by five dogs. The miracle Mutts is a therapeutic program that used certified therapy dogs to provided comfort and emotional and support. This is useful for fellow students due to finals coming up that can be stressful and having something clam before finals.

Dave Seymour leading the class in a guided meditation practice. (Kelly Gutierrez) Last Thursday, May 7th, a meditation workshop was hosted by Rubi Haro and Dave Seymour. The workshop focused on breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and student discussion around managing stress through meditation. During the workshop, Seymour led the students through a meditation exercise that lasted around thirty minutes. Students sat quietly with their eyes closed while he guided the session in a calm voice.

Notebooks are open, pens are scribbling and deadlines are closing in; it’s finals time at BC! Psychology Club of BC hosted a casual space to review material, support each other and study the week before finals on May 7 as the semester comes to a close. “No stash too big- you’ve got what it takes,” read one of the many stickers sprinkled on the tables alongside notepads, fidget toys, pencils and rubber ducks free for students to take.

After twenty years, a cult classic returned to theaters for a sequel. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” was released in theaters May 1. The original cast returned for their original roles such as Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), Nigel (Stanley Tucci), and Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt). In this film, Andy has now become an award-winning journalist; however, she and her fellow reporters from the New York Vanguard have all been fired through text message.

After over 30 years of teaching at Bakersfield College, Helen Acosta received the “Samuel W. McCall Outstanding Professor of the Year” award. The student-voted accolade highlights both her excellent capabilities as a professor and her passion for teaching since her time as a college student. In short, Acosta was raised in a family of teachers. She initially attended Orange Coast College to study music to diverge from her father but was similarly drawn to communication studies instead.

May 6, 2026 Wednesday, April 29, Bakersfield College had guest speaker Dr. Danielle Adams give students and faculty a fascinating lecture on the Arabian sky in the Fireside room from 1 – 3 p.m. Dr. Adams delivered an engaging and thought-provoking lecture on cultural astronomy, with a focus on Arabian star traditions, a topic people don’t typically converse about.

Jaafar Jackson stars in the musical biographical film “Michael,” portraying the one-of-a-kind King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The biographical drama centers on Jackson’s early life and rise to fame, following his journey from his beginnings as the “skinniest Jackson” with the Jackson 5 to becoming one of the most influential artists in music history.

Just when we thought “Stranger Things,” was over, we received a nice treat from the Duffer Brothers. “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85,” released April 23 on Netflix. It is a 10 episode season and it gives the fans of the series, a look at what happened when the characters were quite younger. The story focuses mostly around the original party, however the female characters are still involved, just not a lot. In the live show the story is mainly centered around Eleven’s character.
