As scientific discoveries continued, our understanding of the universe changed, and so too did the conversation between science and faith. Galileo, a faithful Catholic, was convinced that his observations confirmed our solar system revolved around the sun as Kepler had described roughly 20 years earlier. His contemporary Catholic leaders disagreed. They held to a more literal interpretation of the Bible, which maintained Earth was at the solar system’s center.

Another stark difference is the appendages. All squids possess eight arms and two, generally longer, tentacles used to capture prey before the arms pull it in for consumption. Bigfin tentacles are nearly the same length as their arms, making them indistinguishable from each other; however, it would be rude to compare appendage lengths. For reference, the largest squid in the ocean, the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), has appendages longer than the average human is tall.

I still believe that, where public education is concerned, accurate representation is more important than a compelling story (and that fact-checking is vital to responsible journalism).
