On July 3, 1996, De La Soul released their fourth studio album, Stakes Is High, a critical moment in the trio’s legacy that marked both a creative shift and a test of their staying power in a changing hip-hop landscape. For the first time in their career, the group, Posdnuos, Dave (aka Trugoy the Dove), and Maseo, parted ways with longtime collaborator and sonic architect Prince Paul, who had shaped their first three LPs: 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, and Buhloone Mindstate.
