Waiting in line on Miracle Mile on a hot August day isn’t exactly the ideal start to lunch, but it was nevertheless apropos of the experience I was about to have. You see, I was waiting to enter STAND.—the diminutive Japanese café from the team behind Shingo. So, stand I did. By this point, STAND had been in its soft-opening stage for about two months, and the daily crowds had not thinned.

SkinSpirit at Miami Worldcenter marks the first Florida outpost of the West Coast-born chain of luxury medical aesthetics clinics. Founded in 2003 by two Stanford alumni, it has since expanded to encompass more than 60 locations across the United States and is known as a premier provider of Botox and dermal fillers, along with high-tech facials, skin rejuvenation and body treatments.

Joia Beach is a breath of fresh air—literally, this breezy outdoor restaurant and beach club is perched along an idyllic stretch of waterfront on an island in the middle of Biscayne Bay. But it’s also refreshing in the sense that it’s not the over-the-top scene I had imagined. Or rather, Joia Beach can be that scene: bottle service, electronic DJs, flashy displays of wealth. But there’s a lot more here, too, a sense of soul that similar Miami venues lack, and actually really great food.
