The air fills with the scent of charred meats and wood smoke as culinary teams carve, sear, and plate their creations on the spot.

This old-school San Francisco institution is, they say, the fifth oldest restaurant in the U.S. (est. 1887 and in its present location since 1946, according to the E Clampus Vitus historic plaque on the pavement outside). The menu bears that out with charming items you won’t find elsewhere, like Celery Victor and Clams Casino.

What is it? A contemporary American restaurant carrying one Michelin star in the Fillmore. Why we love it: On a quiet street near the edge of Japantown, 7 Adams bustles with attentive waitstaff, crazy-skilled chefs and blissed out diners. Behind the chef’s counter, there’s gorgeous backlit mod-shaped embedded wall compartments holding plants, stemware, candles and a miniature statue of the Michelin man petting a dog.

Sure, springtime cherry blossoms are delicate, frothy and beautiful, but almond blossoms are just as lovely and actually carry a stronger fragrance. You may have to take a bit of a drive to see them, but now’s the time to go.
