Why do Christians believe in the doctrine of the Trinity? Although the term Trinity does not occur in Scripture, the concept is inherently biblical. The Trinitarian nature of God is revealed implicitly in the Old Testament and explicitly in the New Testament. The doctrine of the Trinity is founded on two fundamental theological realities: (1) There is one true God. (2) The one God has eternally existed as three distinct Persons, each of whom is equally and fully God.

Recently, a student asked me a question that I had never been asked before: "What was your favorite thing about studying at The Master's Seminary?" I appreciated the opportunity to pause and reflect on that question. Looking back, my time at The Master's Seminary was truly one of the greatest blessings of my life. When my wife and I moved from Northwest Ohio to Southern California in 2018, we had no idea what to expect.

Within church history, the doctrine of God's sovereignty represents a continental divide between denominations and theologians. Becoming a seasoned expositor of God’s Word requires a method. And the starting point of this method is of primal importance. Biblical exposition must begin with reverence for God. If you want to be an expositor, you must get the starting point right. In short, start and stay with God. Hermeneutics are the rules used to interpret the Bible. They serve an indispensable role in the formation of your methodology.

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." —Philippians 1:21 The history of Christianity is marked by many heroes of the faith who lived Philippians 1:21. Fervent in faith, many believers forsook the temporary shell of humanity to attain a far better eternity with Christ. The testimony of Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming, and Nate Saint, who risked their lives to share the gospel among the Ecuador Quechua Indians, is one such example.

In his account of his dear friend, Jonathan Edwards introduces David Brainerd’s life in this way: “There are two ways of representing and recommending true religion and virtue to the world. The one is by doctrine and precept, the other is by instance and example. Such an instance we have in the excellent person whose life is published in the following pages." We are called to imitate the example of the lives of faithful saints who have gone before us.

As a pastor, how you know and love your fellow leaders could make the difference between success and failure in ministry. The apostle Paul presents a superior example for us in this area. While imprisoned in Rome, Paul wrote to the Colossian church to encourage them in their faith and to make a stand for orthodox Christology. Since he had never been to Colossae, he sent them a kind of verbal “group photo” of his band of workers (Col 4:7–14).

I was reading Richard Pratt’s fine book, He Gave Us Stories. He was discussing what precious little attention we give to the work of the Holy Spirit in the task of interpreting Scripture. Of course, some articles and brief pieces discuss this, but Dr. Pratt stated that, to his knowledge, the most recent work of any size on this matter was written by John Owen over three hundred years ago.
