Through TNO Ventures, technologies are spun out into start-ups and scale-ups that contribute to both defence and the economy. ‘This increases independence and sovereignty,’ says Philip. A well-known example is Robin Radar, originating from TNO innovation. What began with bird radar, developed into advanced drone radar systems, now deployed worldwide.

Looking ahead: Defence in five years Verhoeff describes an organisation that is larger, but also more complex. 'We will be dealing with enormous volumes of data. AI will be indispensable in processing it and supporting decision-making.' The earlier-mentioned high–low mix will also have become reality. 'More (semi-) autonomous systems, greater flexibility, and the ability to scale up quickly. That gives us operational strength.' There will also be a focus on space capabilities.

Strong collaboration across disciplines The VIMtima project brings together an international consortium of eight partners spanning research, healthcare, technology development, industry, and societal organizations. TNO coordinates the project and contributes expertise in Organ‑on‑Chip technology, microbiome research, and translational modelling. Amsterdam UMC and Radboud UMC provide clinical expertise, access to human vaginal tissue, and patient‑relevant data to support translational validation.

Offshore wind is scaling rapidly, but its circularity challenge is becoming more visible with every passing year. The first generation of offshore wind farms is now approaching decommissioning, and the share of turbines requiring recycling is expected to increase steadily. Modern turbine designs tend to be more tightly optimised for their intended service life, whilst offshore machines at end of life face a different reality altogether.
