BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is holding an open house in Spallumcheen next week regarding its controversial proposal to harvest trees on Mount Rose Swanson, a popular recreation area in the community. The open house will take place at the Township of Spallumcheen Municipal Hall (4144 Spallumcheen Wy.) Thursday, Sept. 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. BCTS representatives will be there to answer any questions and review the harvest plans.

Red Deerians celebrated Latin American culture with dancing, live performances, food, vendors and more. The second annual Latin Festival was hosted by the Central Alberta Inclusive Latin Association (CAILA) in Red Deer’s Capstone neighbourhood on Saturday, Sept. 5. “Today’s all about bring community together,” said Melissa Monzon, CAILA president. “We want to share the Latin American culture with whoever wants to be a part of this.

A four-month-long campfire ban within Penticton city limits has been lifted. The Penticton Fire Department cited cooler temperatures and recent rainfall when rescinding its ban on campfires, effective Sept. 4. “While conditions have improved, the City of Penticton encourages residents to remain cautious and take steps to reduce wildfire risk,” the city said in a release.

British Columbia’s police watchdog is investigating an officer-involved shooting near Salmo where a man was seriously injured. According to a Sept. 4 BC RCMP statement, officers from the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team were assisting Creston RCMP in the execution of a search warrant on Ski Hill Road on Sept. 3 at approximately 10:11 a.m. when the incident occurred.

March 18, 1936 – August 30, 2025 It is with profound sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Joseph (Joe) Crichton Duncan, on August 30, 2025 in Ladysmith, British Columbia. Known in the amateur radio community as VE7DWD and formerly VA2DB, Joe’s keys have now fallen silent. However, for all who knew him—whether in person or through radio waves—his zest for life and adventurous spirit remain unforgettable.

The amount of waste being disposed in the North Okanagan is on a steady decline, despite the fact that the region’s population is growing. Yet, the Regional District of North Okanagan’s (RDNO) target for waste disposal is still considerably lower than last year’s encouraging numbers. For the fourth consecutive year, the total amount of waste sent to RDNO landfills decreased in 2025, the regional district said.

October 5, 1960 – August 14, 2026 Heather Georgie McKenzie passed away August 14, 2026 at Wellington Park Care Centre, in Burlington, Ontario. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, October 5, 1960. Heather moved with her parents living in Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and finally B.C. Thank you to Dr. Singh and the wonderful staff at Wellington Park. Interment and Celebration of Life will be held at St.Peter’s Anglican Church on December 5, 2026.

Loving husband of 57 years to Karen (nee Laddner) passed away August 26, 2026, in Duncan Hospice after a long, brave battle with esophagus cancer. Sons Ben and Andy were by his bedside. As well as his wife Karen, Bruce leaves to cherish his memories: his sons Ben (Lorry), Andy (Leah) and grandchildren Liberty, Burke, Nova and Nina. Bruce was predeceased by brother Robert, sister Susan, father Sidney (Jack) and mother Ruth. Bruce was a TELUS retiree. He spent his career in Calgary and Edmonton.

89 of Duncan, BC ~ Passed away August 24, 2026 He worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years, upon his retirement from loading log barges for Schon Timber/Harbour Sort Ladysmith, BC. He enjoyed camping, salmon fishing and wintering in Arizona in his much loved motorhome. He was predeceased by his loving wife Helen on April 24, 2006 after 49 years together. He is survived by their children, Randy (Lindsay), Brian (Kim), and Kelly Graham (Ivan).
