Catching fish is getting tedious as August nears. Matt Modjeski, Department of Natural Resources conservation warden for Monroe County, said August is the dog days of summer and makes fishermen work and search harder for fish with the hot and humid weather. Modjeski believes trout anglers have the most potential for success. “I’ve yet to get out myself, but ... the bit of rain we had was not a gully-washer, so I think the trout streams are running clear,” he said.

The Tomah Torpedoes youth swim team completed its third of four swim meets on July 28 at West Salem’s Swarthout Pool. Warmups started off with a chilly temperature, but the coaching staff said the Tomah swimmers weren’t deterred as they stepped up, took their mark and dove into the pool. Coach Julia Koput said many new swimmers “were brave and swam new events they’ve never swam before.

The Tomah American Legion Post 201 Juniors baseball team gained a split with Sparta Thursday. Tomah’s 16-and-under squad lost the opener 9-4 before claiming a come-from-behind 7-6 victory in the nightcap in a doubleheader at Dennis Senz Field. The first game was seven innings, and the second game went five innings before darkness arrived. Tomah owns a 6-5 record in the Chuck Hockenberry Division of the Coulee Region American Legion Baseball League. The record includes a 2-1 loss at Holmen July 2.

An inconsistent schedule has led to an inconsistent Tomah American Post 201 Seniors baseball team. Tomah’s 18-and-under team dropped a 20-7 decision to Holmen at Dennis Senz Field. It was the team’s first action since June 28, when it played Black River Falls in a game that was called due to darkness The Seniors were supposed to play Sparta July 2 in the Veterans Showcase and the Onalaska Tournament July 6-8, but those plans were scrapped due to lack of Tomah players.
