‘Mercy’ / Amazon MGM Thanks for reading Held Over by Popular Demand! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. This weekend, as invariably happens most Januaries, is having wintry weather. It clearly is having an impact on box office, but for most of the affected areas the bad conditions arose late Saturday, meaning most of the damage will be done today, normally the weakest day of the weekend.
The #1 Netflix Movie Isn't 'Wake Up Dead Man' - It's 'The Great Flood' from Korea, Another Original
‘The Great Flood’ (Netflix) When “Wake Up Dead Man,” the third movie in the “Knives Out” series (second made for Netflix) debuted on the streamer last week, we made a bad prediction. Thanks for reading Held Over by Popular Demand! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Just as we did for Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” we figured it could settle in for a multi-week stay at the top of the streamer’s top 10 most viewed movie list. Oops. Wrong again.
The Best News Pre-Xmas: Four Films Open at $16 Million +; 'Marty' Is 'Supreme'
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ (Disney) The headline could be that James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (Disney) with $88 million debuted more than a third lower than the 2022 second franchise entry. But the real story, and it’s the more encouraging one, is that the top five films this weekend totaled more than the top five three years ago. Thanks for reading Held Over by Popular Demand! December 12 is a little early to open a top holiday release (generally the third Friday of the month is the starting point for that, as is the case this year). 'One Battle' Stays #1 at VOD, but Otherwise Home Viewing This Week Gets Strange
‘Champagne Problems’ /Netflix Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” (Warner Bros.) as expected stayed #1 on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists in its second week out. It could continue for a while, but “Regretting You” (Paramount) might challenge it when it’s released Tuesday. The Colleen Hoover adaptation will go digital a month after its theatrical release, an early indication that the new David Ellison-led studio gets the value of this market with shorter windows.
