Getting anything that is handwritten in the mail is rare. I am talking about actually handwritten. Sometimes a business will send a thank-you note that looks handwritten, but was actually written by a robot pen. And once you realize that, it can feel like another piece of junk mail. Writing and mailing notes takes more effort than sending a digital message; however, the recipient of the card will likely feel delighted to receive something in the mail that’s not a bill or an advertisement.

In today’s high-tech world, thank-you messages should still feel personal. With the abundance and easy access to AI, it can be easy not to think much about your thank messages, especially if you are not handwriting them. Just another task to check off the list. I recently watched a YouTube video with a list of things to do instead of scrolling endlessly. The first tip, about gratitude, caught my attention. Ali Abdaal describes an exercise he has people do at events. The first thing he does is have people close their eyes. Next, he asks them to imagine someone they have a sense of gratitude towards. Then, think about what they would say to that person as an expression of their gratitude or how they have helped.

A tradition around many dinner tables on Thanksgiving is to ask each person to share something they are thankful for. Common responses are friends, family, pets, food, and good health. These answers are good but easy and automatic. It’s similar when someone asks, “How are you?” and your response is the typical one-word, “good” or “great.” You could surprise your family or guests this Thanksgiving with a more profound response.

I recently had one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I completed a Mammoth March at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. A Mammoth March is a 20-mile hike to be completed in around 8 hours. However, no one is keeping track of your time, and it’s okay if it takes people longer to finish. The event was in September. I committed to doing the hike with family members the previous November. When I started training, walking 2 miles around my mostly flat neighborhood felt challenging.

I finally saw the Northern Lights, and I was awestruck. It was the most spectacular display I have ever seen in the sky with pinks, greens, and purples. I am so thankful that I was able to see them. And a special vacation trip was not needed. However, I nearly missed one of the most spectacular displays of the Northern Lights in recent history. I live in Lenawee County, in southeast Michigan.
