Southeast of Tracy, strong winds blew down George Finck’s mill. In town, G.A.D. Buschke’s 14-month-old son, who had been near death, is now out of danger.
It was April 2, 1898, when these news items broke in the Tracy Press. Thousands more followed in subsequent years. An original copy of the first paper that printed those items is kept in the Tracy Historical Museum.
The first issue made its debut as a weekly with world and national news briefs, fictional stories and a column titled “The Fair Sex,” which offered women readers housekeeping tips.
Thomas Duffy first published the paper after other weeklies with names such as Tracy News, the Tracy Exponent and Tracy Times failed. Source

Last week’s “Mystery Photo” had Tracy High School students Dale Gibson (left), Cody Murphy and Billy Simon chow down on pies as they took part in a pie eating contest sponsored by the Tracy High FFA classes in February 2008 as part of the school’s observance of national FFA Week. Students had to wolf down a strawberry rhubarb, cherry or apricot pie blindfolded.

Pair of portraits take top place in camera club photo of the month
A pair of portrait photographs by two different photographers shared the top prize for the Tracy Camera Club’s Photo of the Month for June. Casey Goodall’s picture “From the Farmers Market” and Andrew Johnson’s picture “Don’t Talk to Strangers” were the top picks in the contest selected by guest judge Joel Ohlsen from the Photographic Society of America.
Nomination period opens for Nov. 3 election
The nomination period for the Nov. 3 election began on Monday and continues through Aug. 7, with the deadline to file nomination papers to be extended to Aug. 12 if a qualified incumbent for that particular office does not file for re-election. The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters announced on Monday that seats are available for city councils, boards of education and special districts across the county. Candidates must also file statements of economic interest by the Aug. 7 deadline.
July employee of the month enjoys a variety of assignments

Moana at the Tracy Animal Shelter Moana is a 1-year-old female Irish Wolfhound mix available for adoption from the Tracy Animal Shelter. She has been at the shelter for 48 days and is ready to head to a new home today. She is a sweetie pie that does well with both cats and dogs. Moana is spayed and current on vaccinations. The community is invited to cheer on some of the region’s most talented shelter dogs at the Second Annual Shelter Animal Olympics, a free, family-friendly event taking place on Friday, July 25, at Plascencia Fields in Tracy.
Tritons prevail in home meet against Dolphins
The Tracy Tritons Swim Club hosted the Manteca Dolphins in team match on Saturday at West High’s Pinkie Phillips Aquatic Center. The Tritons prevailed, outscoring the Dolphins 3,103.5-2,130.5. Phoebe Martinez once again dominated the 13-14 girls division, winning all three of her individual events, including a time of 57.25 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle to break her own record in that event. She also won the 50 butterfly (29.03) and 50 freestyle (26.32).
Courthouse funding back in state budget for 2026-27
A campaign by local policy makers from earlier this year has paid off, with the state agreeing to fund a new courthouse for Tracy in the 2026-27 budget year. Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom (D-Tracy) announced this week that the state budget includes $3.5 million in General Fund support for the Performance Criteria phase of the new Tracy Courthouse, with a total project authorization of nearly $65.9 million.
