A Brazilian judge has ordered the deportation of alleged Russian spy and Trinity graduate Sergey Cherkasov. Cherkasov is currently serving a five-year prison sentence in Brazil for falsifying documents. He will be deported once his sentence is complete. After his expulsion, he will be banned from returning to Brazil for 30 years. In Brazil, Cherkasov obtained identifying documents that he used to enrol in university courses in Ireland and the United States, under the alias Viktor Muller Ferreira.

Located in West-Central Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is eponymously named after the Congo river; the second largest river in the world and the only one to meander back and forth across the equator. 60% of the country itself is covered by the Congo Basin tropical rainforest. Martin Naughton, an Irish billionaire and philanthropist, has died aged 87. In a statement released by his family, Naughton was said to have taken ill while travelling the United States with his wife Carmel. He died at Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle on Friday. Naughton was a founder of Glen Dimplex in 1973 and is one of Ireland’s largest privately-owned manufacturing businesses, with a turnover of some €1.5 billion, and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of domestic appliances.

194,000 new historical records are now freely and permanently available on the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland (VRTI), bringing the total number of available records to 544,000, with some dating back as early as the 12th century. The VRTI, launched in 2022, is an international research partnership hosted by Trinity College Dublin and funded primarily by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.

On Friday June 19, Olympic gold medal boxer Katie Taylor and four others received honorary degrees from College. The others conferred include traditional musician Sharon Shannon, civil rights lawyer Baroness Helena Kennedy, human rights activist Sister Helen Prejean, and Irish author Colm Tóibín. Sister Helen is one of the world’s leading activists for the abolition of the death penalty.

In recent weeks, Trinity College Dublin Law School has undertaken a review of governance structures of law affiliated student organisations, with a particular focus on the Trinity College Dublin (TCD) Law Student Colloquium, which precipitated a series of public statements from representatives of both parties. The Law Student Colloquium self-describes as ‘Ireland’s leading student-led legal initiative’.

A laboratory in the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI) building caught fire yesterday June 17, resulting in traffic disruptions and road closures in the city centre. The fire started on the seventh floor of TBSI shortly before 10:30am, and was responded to with firefighters in hazmat suits.

Trinity College Dublin has placed 75th in the 2027 QS World University Rankings, holding its strongest position in a decade. This year’s ranking confirms College’s place as Ireland’s top ranked university. The QS World University Rankings evaluated 8,808 institutions and ranked 1,504 universities across nine indicators within five categories.

The Trinity Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) student group, in collaboration with Juice Jar, hosted a fundraiser event in support of the ‘Melon-Aid’ campaign for Palestinian scholars. The event took place on Monday June 15 at 6 pm at Juice Jar on Dawson Street. The collaboration encourages people to buy the watermelon-based juice from Juice Jar, noting that proceeds will go to helping scholars from Palestine to study in universities across Ireland.
