The Lasso is a weekly student publication of Texas Woman’s University, written for, and produced by, students.In print since 1914, we recently celebrated our centennial year and look forward to the next hundred years serving the students of all three TWU campuses. With every issue we strive to fill The Lasso with important and relevant news, entertainment, and commentary serving not only the Denton Campus, but our campuses in Dallas and Houston as well. We print 1,300 issues of The Lasso each week throughout the academic year with two issues during the summer, reaching students in both print and online media.The presentation of news and editorials and the personal opinions expressed in our media source are those of The Lasso staff and writers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the faculty, staff, students, administration, or the Regents of Texas Woman’s University. On Sept. 9, Texas Woman’s University hosted the NorTex College Fair, providing local parents, students and kids the opportunity to explore a variety of colleges, learn more about financial aid and just how attainable their desired higher education is. Attendees also had “the opportunity to talk to graduate programs, trade schools, and the military services.
More than a pretty place: Protecting Alaska’s wildlife
I recently traveled to Alaska with the Texas Woman’s University volleyball team for a tournament, and I feel incredibly blessed that my sport gives me the opportunity to travel and experience places I may not have otherwise seen. From the moment I arrived, I was in constant awe of Alaska’s breathtaking scenery. The mountains touched the sky, and the valleys dipped down to the water that sparkled in the sun.
TWU soccer plans on making waves at its season opener in Hawaii
Marking the start of their season, the Pioneer soccer team will travel to two opening matches in Honolulu, Hawaii. During this trip, they will face off against Chaminade (Thursday, Aug. 27, 12 p.m. HST / 5 P.M. CST) and Hawaii Pacific (Sunday, Aug. 30, 2 p.m. HST / 7 P.M. CST).

Book Review: Project Hail Mary
With the major motion picture coming out, “Project Hail Mary” has been all over the internet. Finding a story with this much action, heart, and humor is rare, but that is exactly what makes “Project Hail Mary” such a special read. From page one, you will find yourself hooked, thinking, “What would I do if the whole world depended on me?” Published on May 4, 2021, “Project Hail Mary” is a science fiction novel written by Andy Weir.
Blagg-Huey Library celebrates ruby anniversary
It has now been 40 years since the 1986 dedication of the Blagg- Huey Library, named for Texas Woman’s University’s first female president. Since then, the Library has become a landmark feature of the TWU campus, and the three-story building echoes a sense of tradition through its Georgian style and Classical motifs. To celebrate the occasion, the Blagg-Huey Library hosted a Ruby Anniversary celebration on Thursday, April 23.

Many students and organizations participated, and even more came out to enjoy the event and experience a little bit of renaissance magic. Know your wildflowers! What’s on campus?
Spring is here, and so too are wildflowers! In honor of Earth Day, we at The Lasso took a nature walk around campus to see what’s growing. This is what we found! Please note that while some of these are edible, do not ingest anything you find on campus or in most urban areas, as they are sprayed and treated with various pesticides and are often subject to roadside contamination.
TWU to host tuition-free Bezos Academy preschool in Denton
Texas Woman’s University is now home to a new tuition-free preschool through a partnership with Bezos Academy, expanding access to early childhood education for both student-parents and the greater Denton community. Officially opening this coming fall semester, Bezos Academy Denton is located on TWU’s Denton campus at 1820 Frame Street and serves children ages three to five.
