Type Media Center is pleased to announce Chase Breaux and Hannah Ponce as the two recipients of the 2026 Robert Masur Fellowship in Civil Liberties. The fellowship, which carries a $3,000 prize, is for law students who intend to carry out significant activities over the summer between their first and second years related to civil rights and/or civil liberties.
Hands Off NYC and Unidos-MN are the Recipients of the Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship
Type Media Center is pleased to announce that Hands Off NYC and Minneapolis-based Unidos-MN will each receive the Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship. These two grassroots organizations are committed to the protection and empowerment of their local communities. Hands Off NYC is a broad coalition of over 200 labor unions, faith leaders, and community groups organizing to protect against, preempt, and prepare for federal incursion in New York City.
Type Media Center Welcomes Six Journalists As Fellows
Type Media Center is pleased to welcome Rachael Bedard, Jasper Craven, Jasmine Garsd, Tanvi Misra, Ryan “R.L.” Nave, and Katie Rose Quandt to the fellowship program. Misra and Quandt will be joining as Type Investigations Reporting Fellows, and Bedard will be joining as an Abelin-Bevier Fellow.
What Does It Take to Get Men to See a Doctor?
For The New York Times Magazine, Abelin-Bevier Fellow Helen Ouyang reports on how men in the United States are much less likely to see a doctor regularly. Men are more likely to die at a younger — male life expectancy at birth is currently 5.3 years less than it is for women — and men have died at higher rates of 14 of the top 15 cases of death.
A Palestinian Doctor in Israel Helps People on Both Sides
For The New Yorker, Puffin Foundation fellow Eyal Press profiles Lina Qasem Hassan, a Palestinian doctor who treats both Israeli and Palestinian patients. After Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7th, Qasem Hassan traveled to a resort in the Dead Sea area and treated Israeli victims at a clinic set up on a hotel’s grounds. Since then, her public condemnations of the Israeli government’s attacks against Gaza have imperiled her job.

Kica Matos is the Recipient of the Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship
Type Media Center is pleased to announce Kica Matos, President of the National Immigration Law Center and the Immigrant Justice Fund, as the recipient of the Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship. The Puffin Foundation and Type Media Center are the mutual sponsors of the award, which is given annually to an individual or organization who has challenged the status quo through distinctive, courageous, imaginative, and socially responsible work of significance.

For The New York Times, Abelin-Bevier Fellow Helen Ouyang examines how the Federal Aviation Administration’s stringent requirements concerning mental health treatment puts pressure on pilots to not seek treatment. Ouyang interviewed several pilots who either knew of colleagues who had hidden medical conditions from the FAA or who admitted to hiding conditions themselves for fear of being grounded. Refusing to disclose mental health problems or receive treatment can have dangerous consequences.
