The Rural Education in the North (REN) research project aims to further strengthen the UArctic Thematic Network for Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity through research activities examining rural education provision across the north.

Members of the UArctic Thematic Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity presented the forthcoming Bloomsbury Academic volume "Innovative Rural Education: International Perspectives on Supporting Multicultural Learning in the Digital Era" during a dedicated symposium at the UArctic Congress 2026 in the Faroe Islands.

I have always been interested in living in UK for a little while, so when I was looking for a place to do my exchange semester in it was a natural choice. It of course helped that for an English-speaking country the distance I’d have to travel was comparatively small and thus the costs much lower than many other majority English speaking countries. After discovering the north2north program, Scotland piqued my interest.

Funded through the UArctic Kingdom of Denmark funding scheme and on this occasion hosted by the University of the Faroes, the Rural Education in the North (REN) research consortium met in Torshavn prior to the UArctic Congress for the second of their project meetings.

The June 2026 edition of the Thematic Networks' Monthly Highlights showcases the work of several networks engaged in collaborative research, education, and outreach activities across the Circumpolar North.

Abigail Waring is a climate physics researcher at the University of Leicester and the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO). Her research focuses on satellite-derived land surface temperature (LST), climate monitoring, and validation, with a particular interest in Arctic and cryosphere science.

An international team of Arctic researchers from Tohoku University, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Aberdeen presented a well-attended panel on Eurasian studies at the 13th East Asian Conference on Slavic Eurasian Studies in Japan from 29–31 May, 2026. The focus of the conference had been on the war of aggression in Ukraine.

Dr Leah Macaden, Senior Lecturer in Nursing Studies and Vice-Lead of the Northern Nursing Education Thematic Network (NNEN), has been awarded the prestigious Fellowship Ad Eundem by the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). Conferred at a ceremony in Dublin on 8 December 2025, she was one of only ten recipients worldwide to receive this honour.

As I just completed my sixth semester as a Bachelor’s student in Greenlandic and Arctic Studies at the University of Copenhagen, it has been an eventful and deeply inspiring experience to participate in the UArctic Congress 2026 and the Ocean Connectivity Conference in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands. It stands out as one of the defining highlights of my academic journey so far.
