Editorial: UB downsized The Spectrum’s newsroom — but we’re still here
The Spectrum long occupied a central place at UB in Student Union 132; it’ll now be in three small classrooms on SU’s third floor Editor’s note: This column is the collective opinion of members of our editorial board. This is not a reported piece. It is a common sight to find a Spectrum staff member sleeping on a couch between the hours of 11 p.m. and 3 a.m on a weekday night in Student Union 132.

Goodbye UB
Editor's Note: This article has been updated to correct the spelling of Mylien Lai's name from Myelin to Mylien. The Spectrum apologies for this error. A place where creative ambitions thrive, and honest storytelling is pursued — The Spectrum. I cannot emphasize enough how much this experience meant to me. Before coming to college, I intended to become a journalist. I have always been passionate about storytelling and shedding light on topics that often go overlooked.
Dear Spectrum
For the longest time I believed that my route would be law as it was the only thing that made sense. Starting my UB career, I pursued the 3+3 program to attain my combined BA and JD, as law was what I'd pursued traditionally and having been told my whole entire adult life that it was my only believable path.
To The Spectrum
I wish I could have made the choice to join sooner My time at The Spectrum has been one of the defining experiences of my time at UB. Some of the best people that I have met at UB have been the editors that I've worked with all year, and I will treasure all of the great times that I have had this year and half of working here. I joined the second half of my junior year, not really knowing what to expect.
Thank you Spectrum for all the good times
And to all of those reading this: go play with and support UB Women’s Rugby Each year, graduating editors are asked to write a goodbye column, reflecting on their time with The Spectrum. My time writing for and leading the sports desk have been incredibly fun and rewarding experiences, experiences that if you told me a few years ago that this side quest was in my future I would not have believed you.
Goodbye, Buffalo!
My whole life, I always said I would be a journalist if money didn’t matter. Controversial, I know. You shouldn’t choose a career just because of the money, I know. I think it’s very important to choose a career you are passionate about regardless, I do. But I was passionate about a lot of things. Particularly, things that make a little more money.
Thank you, The Spectrum
Editors note: edits have been made to this article. I first heard of The Spectrum when a guest speaker, Matt Parrino, visited my COM 101 class after I transferred to UB. Right away, I knew I wanted to be a part of it, so I decided to reach out — and from the beginning, I was welcomed. My experience as a Copy Editor has meant more to me than expected, and part of that came with long nights. After my classes and research lab, I’d head straight to The Spectrum, spending at least 12 hours on campus.
