The UEMS Section and Board of Endocrinology, in close collaboration with the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), has contributed to two recent publications examining postgraduate specialist training, continuing medical education, and the accreditation of training centres in endocrinology across Europe.

Pain is one of the most prevalent presenting complaints to the emergency department (ED). Effective pain management remains an important responsibility of emergency physicians; however, significant variation in prescribing practices is seen and pain is often poorly managed . Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness among adults with diabetes. Since the establishment of the Irish National Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme in 2013, screening uptake has improved substantially. The Council has adopted the creation of the Section of Hematology which will Allow all hematologists across Europe to be recognised under the same definition, Provide a formal platform for hematologists to contribute to UEMS; deliberations; Support harmonised European Training Requirements (ETRs); Strengthen the visibility and influence of Hematology in European healthcare systems.

Invasive pneumococcal disease is a preventable threat. Yet elite athletes remain off the radar for vaccination despite being a risk group 1. This can be due to underlying co-morbidities or the nature of increased and intense travel schedules within the sports community. Athletes are also susceptible to infections due to reduced circulating memory T cells and upper airway dysbiosis.

Across Europe, postgraduate medical training is undergoing profound transformation due to workforce shortages, evolving competencies, and increasing healthcare demand.

The Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS) is pleased to share the draft programme of the upcoming UEMS Congress, providing participants with an initial look at the planned scientific sessions, policy debates, and opportunities for exchange among European medical specialists and stakeholders.

As a signatory of the EMOS statement, UEMS, together with FEMS, AEMH, CEOM, EJD, UEMO underlines the urgent need to recognise the medical profession as an arduous occupation. The realities of medical practice, including irregular and prolonged working hours, night and shift work, high responsibility and constant exposure to risk, have a cumulative impact on physicians’ health and well-being.
