A 2018 graduate of the University of Houston-Downtown, Erica Chavez has been teaching for 11 years. Now she is in UHD’s Master of Educational Leadership program. Her goal? To augment her years of experience in the classroom with new skills and knowledge acquired through her graduate studies. Ultimately, Chavez wants to lead a school as its principal.

UHD’sDrama Program continues to be one of H-Town’s hidden gems with the O'Kane Theatre serving as both a performance venue and a professional training space for more than 35 years. Thanks to a $50,000 gift from The Elkins Foundation, the theater is undergoing a major renovation, just in time for the fall semester.

UHD senior Max Von Rettberg graduates this August with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a clear goal in mind. This fall, he is pursuing a Master of Social Work at the University of Houston, and, upon completion of his MSW, he plans on working with Veterans Affairs to assist other veterans like himself. Von Rettberg served in the U.S. Air Force for six years before studying at Lone Star College and transferring to UHD.

For the Valdez family, UHD wasn’t just a first college experience—it was the launchpad for three siblings into careers in healthcare and public service. Dr. Isaac Valdez graduated from UHD in 2014 with an undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics. Since then, he’s worked as a clinical program manager at MD Anderson Cancer Center, earned a Ph.D. from UTHealth Houston, and served as Vice President for Apollo Healthcare, a Division of Radiation Business Solutions.
